We Were Promised Jetpacks, Paste Party, Stage on Sixth, Austin, 15March 2012, SXSW 2012

Having seen them listed at so many shows and never having caught them, it was great to finally see We Were Promised Jetpacks. They have such a great name, it was great that they did it some justice. They played uptempo indie, with a similar level of heaviness to Idlewild.

Their arrangements had some good dynamics, playing the classic quiet verse to loud chorus trick interestingly and well. They also had really good, long instrumental sections that rose and fell really effectively, then suddenly went very loud. The penultimate song was really strong, so the last one felt slightly anti-climactic in comparison.

The singer and guitarist were bright red in the face by the end from all the exertion. It was well worth their efforts, though, as it was a good set.
