Alabama Shakes, Radio Day Stage, 14 March 2012

The band opened really strong with a short, sprightly track. The room was packed with dozens of photographers crowded around the stage.
They played really good blues rock, with big nods to Janis Joplin or to Aretha Franklin being backed by Free. They also broke into stomping Stones-esque country blues. The audience really got into it, with none of the standoffishness sometimes seen at convention centre day shows.

Singer Brittany Howard had a great belting rasp that flowed into feather-soft singing as the music quiet ended. The drummer really pounded away and the band were very tight and really rocked. It felt wrong to be sitting down for any part of the show.

Our show of SXSW so far....
