Tribes, 14 March 2012, 1100 Warehouse, SXSW 2012

Tribes were really loud! The sound in 1100 Warehouse was pretty rubbish, really clattery and echoey. The mix improved through the show, but wasn't great. The band said it was their third set of the day, and it felt like they were hammering through it, though it was none the worse for that.

From comments in the audience, it seemed their between song chat may have been unintelligible to Texan ears. And it was odd to be the biggest fans in crowd after our previous Tribes show experiences at Field Day and Barfly. At those shows, the whole crowd seemed to know every word to every song and sang along as of their lives depended on it. Crowd were appreciative and seemed to like it enough. They certainly didn't go wild, but it go busier down the front as the set entry on and people were swaying, if not noshing, from a few songs in.

The band played When My Day Comes with a rocket up it, sped up and rocked out version, and closed with a blast through We Were Children, which again sounded strange without the crowd hollering along. But it seemed like people liked them and, considering the crowd seemed to be around for a night out than especially for the bands, they have probably made a few converts to the cause. Over the course of the wealth of shows they're playing, that should add up to a fair few US fans.

Set list: Whenever, Girlfriend, Sappho, Corner of an English Field, Himalaya, Coming of Age, Walking in the Street, When My Day Comes, We Were Children
